It is a shame that you are showcasing such a bootleg production such as the Miss Africa International pageant on your website. As someone who is going to be a reporter one day, it seems to me that you would have done your homework on Ellen Dunbar and her nortoriously known pageant. This does not serve as an attack on you but merely a warning to another African sister. The pageant is a scam and Ellen talks a good game but can not deliver when it comes time to it. When the pageant fails like it has done for the third time in a row, it is everyone else who is left to blame but herself. I would be VERY careful in your dealings with this woman because she is not highly regarded in the D.C. metropolitan area AT ALL!!!! If you want evidence, ask her if you can speak to the other organizers from years past. Do you not think that if she treated people with respect that people would have stayed on to help her make this pageant a success? Has it ever crossed your mind as to why the pageant is not on the scale she led you and the other contestants to believe? Have you ever wondered why she is so disorganized and can not take you to her headquarters or a proper office? As a former organizer and someone who knew Ellen Dunbar, I can tell you she is a fraudster and someone who stole the idea of Miss Africa International pageant from another organizer in the D.C. area. But you know what, God sees everything. Hopefully, you too will see the kind of woman you are dealing with and then you will really understand. Please feel free to share this with anyone you please. Have a great day!

Whoever wrote the above...who are you? I hope you are not attacking the person who hosts this website!!! But I do agree with the person who wrote the above. I, too, worked for, with Ellen for some time and was utterly amazed at the level of confusion and disorganization reflected in the woman's character. She actually went out of her way to put organizers against each other so she could control EVERYTHING which happened until some unfortunate events with the contestants surfaced quite a bit of information. For one some of the contestants had paid $1500 only to get to D.C. and no hotel to be available for a day or so. To make matters worse, every problem which occured, Ms Dunbar was not willing to face the facts as the source of the problems. Hence, tension built up and anger arose. When Ellen was challenged, her response back was that SHE was the CEO and this was HER pageant. Mind you we were volunteers who leant our time, energy and even money to this cause because we all love Africa very much and are tired of the negative images which we see on television. The concept of the pageant is excellent but the execution of it is horrific and is in badly need of management. Seeing this pageant is why people (including other Africans) feel Africans can not do anything right. If you talk to Cynthia Kanema who went on to represent Zambia at Miss Universe, will she tell you about her reign as Miss Africa International? Why is it not mentioned when she does her interviews? Hmmm...let me think...a.) shame...b.) anger at having been duped...or c.)disgust for the Ms Dunbar and her unprofessional mannerisms? All of the above. If Ellen contacts you again, run for your life because she will use you to get what she wants and then drops you when you can not give her what she wants which is money.

Who actually won the title for the pageant? I was at the show but left because it was really, really, really bad and unprofessional. First of all the audience was kept waiting for a couple of hours which was something I expected coming from an African. Then when the show did get started, the person who was supposed to be hosting it did not come on stage for a really long time. I think he came on stage 45 minutes before I left and he did a horrible job. He was supposed to be some actor from Nigeria. He was not attractive what so ever and could barely speak English...I was laughing the whole time mosttly at him and for the fact I had paid $50 to come to a run-down whack production. (My two friends, who came with me, however were not so happy.)There was no glamour to any of this mess and the show looked like it had been thrown up there at the last minute. I hate to say this but this was one of the worst productions I had ever seen. People were trying to get their money back but when I left I called one of my friends who was still there. She was hoping that the show would get better by the night but when the show was half way done and the Warner Theater started dimming the lights, she said she knew it was time to get the hell out of there...too bad for those contestants who did not even really get a competition. If I were them, I would sue the pageant and its organizers. People had warned me not to go but I am always trying to support anything dealing with Africa and this was a SHAME!!!! Now I know not to go to any shows concerning Miss Africa International or hosted by Mokoli productions.

I am always happy to support and promote anything positive for Africans BUT this Year's Pageant was a Terrible!!!! It was unorganized, late, shameful, and the host should never be allowed to speak in public again.
The pageant itself is a wonderful way to show the beauty of Africa but I am afraid it will not last because of the lack of organization. Maybe next year will be better...too bad I will not be ther to see it, not even if it is free to attend!

From Aisha Kouyate MISS MALI INTL 2004.
I AM NOT ASHAME OF STATING MY NAME LIKE SOME OF YOU ARE.SHAME ON YOU ! Specially the "ex organizers". you really have time crticizing something you can not do yourself. If you think that you can do better why after 2 rounds you did not stand up and say : " hey that's shame, it needs more organization, more of this and more of that blabla so let me shut up and do something about it and help not Ellen but the vision that she carries and you PRETENDED THAT YOU HAD ALSO when you stepped into the pageant organization".
Then you say that you like Africa but appearently not its citizens. I fyou have a problem with Ms Dunbar , go find her and fix it but you don't need to put on the internet . And that's for all of you that think you can do better. Be a woman or a man , step up to the plate and please do better because in case you forgot you are supposed to help promoting and not destroying. As far as the organizers are concerned, they are the ones who "messed me up" last year and i won't go into details though i can . I i start telling oyu what i suffer with them it will take hours. I met with this year's contestant this year and did not tell them what happen last year between me and the organizers, i did not tell them who did what because i felt that it was not important. Waht was important was for them to be concentrated and focus, enjoy themselves and represent the colors of Africa. But of course you guys haven't reached that maturity yet, you have to worry about that.I found that there were a lot of mistakes last year and this is the reason why i stepped in this year and decided to help Ellen in the organizer.Quick Example: Last year's translation from french to English for Ms Benin and Ms Congo was horrific . this is why , since io thought i could do better, Ellen was open enough to after my suggestion ask me to do it this year.AND IT WAS PERFECTLY DONE ( if you can understand french). This is called CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISMS and that's what the pageant need: people that can criticize and then when needed do better.
If you can not do that please practice the following: abstinence.

This message is to the Miss Mali Intl 2004 Aisha Kouyate. I have just gotten wind of this chat/blog going on and was really disqusted by your level of ignorance. First of all you really need to take some English writing classes because obviously you are in such need of it. (If YOU know English). It is UNBELIEVABLE how misguided you are concerning this whole pageant thing. As one of the former organizers from 2003 AND 2004, you were not really present to see what went on behind closed doors, the deceit, the lies, the outright disrespect that Ellen had for anything that was mentioned to her to genuinely improve the pageant and make things better for you contestants. Which by the way, the organizers were trying their best to make sure you were well taken care of. You were not at any of the meetings that happened. I stayed on for TWO years believing it would get better and trying to help Ellen with NEVER a kind word of appreciation from her. And as I remember it, the ONLY reason you were given the title of Miss Mali is because there were no other women contending for that particular country and also Ellen needed the Malian embassy!!! THAT WAS IT!!! And if Ellen tells you any differently, then she is lying out of her teeth because that is what. It was even stated by Ellen many times that you and the other girls were not nearly as attractive as the lot that passed in 2003. Look at yourself and ask how many modeling agencies have been banging down your door to ask you for what ever Ellen said you were going to get. How many movie/television offers have you been given? Has anyone hunted you down to get an interview? Or did someone offer you a fantastic job because of your so-called looks? I now work for Ford modeling agency and you definitely are not pageant/modeling material. And that is as CONSTRUCTIVE as the CRITICISM is going to get. As for the constructive criticism with the pageant; Ellen took you on for help, she was DESPERATE!!!! She probably did not charge you or pay for anything for you so you were happily used. As you can see, with or with out your help, it did not do anything since the crowd was laughing at how you translated information for some of the French speaking contestants. Look, Miss Mali, or whatever you call yourself, you are the one who needs to be ASHAMED of even bothering to tell people you were associated with this pageant and linking your name to it. As for the organizers, if you had had a problem with one of us, then maybe you should have told us. Don't come now all bitter because the judges (or better yet) Ellen did not pick you as the winner. NOBODY messed you up last year. You did all that perfectly by yourself!

To my dear fellow Africans:

My name is Jonathan Mthombeni Jr. Just to give a quick background, I was born in South Africa but grew up in California. My sweetheart Chichi just represented Zambia in the 2005 Miss Africa Int. pagent and was recently informed that she won. That is my connection to this conversation.
I have some comments to make of my own but before that I'd like to make a suggestion for all of us. When we have an opportunity like this to share opinions and feelings let us please refrain from personal attacks. If each of us desire to see the people of Africa succeed then we are all on the same side, working for, praying for and seeking answers to the same problems. We are bound to see some things differently, we are bound to have disagreements but everybody is entitled to their opinion and we should honor that entitlement by refusing to allow ourselves to tear each other down when disagreeing. Therefore feel free to disagree, but do so with the purpose of building each other up. This is the meaning of constructive criticism.
Having said that I want to ask that each of you continue to pray that the purpose behind the idea of such an organization may yet be acheived regardless of whichever obstacles threaten to destroy it. As Chichi was preparing for the pagent I had a very simple prayer. I asked that the monologue she was to deliver would be delivered in the powerful way it was envisioned when written and that the message, that our women, dispite their trials and suffering, are worthy, beautiful, and phenomenal beings, would be efficacious in the lives of all those who heard it. The second thing I asked God for was that Chichi would touch the lives of her fellow contestants and all those she came in contact with so that they may see God's love in her life. Since the pagent Chichi has received many warm regards, comments and well wishes. They thought she was so nice they voted her Miss Congeniality. The most powerful comment though came from a woman who, after the show, approached I believe Ellen (I'm not certain as to who exactly) and said, "I am that HIV mother in that monologue." The monologue contains a line that reads something like, I am that faithful, true, yet HIV infected wife..., speaking of those women whose husbands have infected them with the virus. This lady went on to say that she was contemplating suicide but after hearing the monologue she felt she could push on.
This is why we stay in the fight my people because though whatever challenges the pagent presented at least one African was encouraged, one life drastically changed, at least one more of us left that place with renewed inspiration to press on.
I am brand new to this Miss Africa International pagent deal. I am in medical school and couldn't get away to attend the show but apparently it had its problems. Yet despite the disappointment I want to ask each of you never to stop praying for it. God gave me everything I prayed for with regard to the pagent and I know He is big enough to allow this crown to be a blessing to Africa and her peoples regardless of any person, challenge, lack of resource, etc.
Remember that what you give and what you have sacrificed you have done for Africa and her peoples and God sees that. Therefore, this year we have dreams to utilize the crown to launch the "Pass it On" project, which is designed to be a program supported by duplicatable enterprises in Africa for the promotion of education, the expansion of an orphanage project already running in Zambia, a trip this summer by a medical team to administer care and education and whichever other opportunities God has prepared. There is then hope to bring beauty from ashes if you always believe. If there is anyone out there who would like to contribute ideas or help to develop the "Pass it On" project (it's an exciting concept) further please e-mail me at masojah@gmail.com.
Remember you can't control circumstance, you can't control other people, you can only control you. Make sure then you stay true to the task and work for our people as if employed by God Himself. I love you all, you are my brothers and sisters and I pray for success in each of your lives.

-Jonathan

.......Due to an error in the tabulation, we were unable to crown Miss Africa International 2005.....
can read on the miss africa international website.....
SHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMEEEEEEEE
and now, when the ex organizers try to say what happened and help the poor african women to understand that this is not a serious pageant; there are ones come with GOD, Praying, talk to mrs Dounbar; i helped to translate ......

You may be ashamed to defend a mess wich involves africa.
You get up stating that you are going to change the negative picture the world have on africa, ...., so thanks everybody in the world have seen the positive picture.....
a pageant without crowned princess......

Let people speak loud and so everybody will know what happen in this pageant; Contestants will be informed; and even the owner of this pageant may be aware that people know what is going on, then she will change her mind; share your experience with everybody not only going speak to ms Dunbar, all african are concerned and of course across all the world....

THANKS TO YOU EX ORGANIZERS, you are more constructives than these people who help young african women continuing believe the lie.

If the most powerful nation in the world announced a winner in their presidential election and then had to recant, pending a recount of the ballots, which ended up going to court and is still disputed to this day, I think it's safe to say we can move on from this. The U.S. is still here I think a pagent can survive. In fact it's the Africans who are crying shame louder than any non-African I can hear. The non-Africans were still able to appreciate the outfits, the beauty and the talents presented by the contestants, it's the Africans, as usual, focused on the wrongs of the event.
I'm not saying the pagent and organizers don't need to address the issues, of course they do. I don't want to be embarrassed either! What I am saying is that we are going to keep going despite the issues and make the best of it, not losing focus on the point. You have to ask yourself what is it all about? Is it the fancy clothes an entertaining program and a shiny crown at the end, or is it an opportunity to connect people who have a desire to do something for Africa to those who have the means for doing it?
Having a beautiful, smooth running pagent is very important, yes. That is what generates interest and gives credibility to the pagent/title in the first place. But even if the program flops it doesn't bring to an end the potential to do something with the networking opportunity. There is a whole year to get out there and build up the name of Miss (insert your country here) International for the sake of Africa one congressperson, businessperson, sponsor, fundraising event etc. at a time. You make it sound like it's all about crowning a beauty queen to be a smiling face on websites.
I'm sorry if you haven't yet discovered the power of prayer to change or create situations, but I have and I know prayer can't be stopped by Ms. Dunbar or pagent debacles, just lack of faith.
Let me further point out that if we continue to use the word "constructive" to describe the tearing down or breaking apart of something it will be no wonder when Africans continue to be famous for much "constructive" talk that results in no action, no results and no progress. What's the point? This year that legacy will change.

Wow!! Very well said! I am a Korean doctor and a black hair product bussiness owner who happened to be at the pageant. I don't know the director but when I went back home all I wanted to talk about was the beauty and brains that Africa has to offer because I came there to watch the show and it was outstanding!
After reading things on this website, I see a very sad side of Africans. A black lady walked in my store one day and asked me why most of the black hair store are owned by asians and why we are so successful. I said to her we succeed because we know how to work together, and she said to me "not Africans, they are out to compete and destroy!" I thought she was wrong and now I see exactly what she meant. Working together in our culture means supporting each other. If you don't like what the person is doing we just leave quietly. I am yet to find an asian site where mature people say terrible things like this against eachother. Even in the United States you don't see this from educated people unless it is politicians trying to get the office from someone. To me this explains why there are so many tribal wars in Africa and it is sad to see that it is Africans like you who bring it on your own countries!! The message you are sending to the world is not to destroy the name of this person you seem to hate so much, you are destroying your name as Africans. Who would want to hire you or work with you when in the end, you will turn back and write such things.
If anyone has noticed, only the bitter ex-organizers are writing these things. My question is that if you were so good and better than the organizers this year, why did you still have problems in the past years? You just look foolish. I agree with the young man, you are destroying your own reputations as Africans and if this woman is strong she should keep going even if one person attends next year. You don't have to help in destroying someones reputations human beings are capable of doing that on their own.
My only concern would be if the girls were in danger, butI have not heard anything yet. Congratulations to all the girls especially the winner. You definately had my vote. With people like this in your cirlcle you have a much harder task ahead of you but don't give up. If your reason to compete was not for self gratification, you will succeed.
To the young woman from Mali, I am sorry that anyone should tear you apart like that. If I were you, I would be afraid because that woman sounds like she could kill if given a chance. Speaking or writing english does not make anyone special. I am a very successful doctor and my english is not even close to perfect because it is not my first language. Please keep your chin up, many americans would love to speak French, it is beautiful. And to the young man, please keep fighting for your continent and keep praying.

Wow Adure so you are this cool? You even have your own website...sweeeeet!! Without the pageant I woul never have met you and all the other lovely ladies. I think people should hear from the contestants this year so that they can know that they are worrying about the wrong things. Dr. Kim said it well, who matters the most here, US the contestants, hello?? Let me tell you my story with Miss Dunbar: The lady is a real african mother. She expected nothing less from the girls but the best. She treated us all the same, no buddy, buddy but with love. She put hours of hard work just to help us. Did someone mention that she had practice free of charge every weekend??Start calculating if you want to talk about money. We got way more than we paid for.Keep in mind time is LOTS of money! Secondly she made sure we all put effort into our outfits so that we could shine. She did not hesitate to say "your dress is not good enough". You think we looked good without evaluation....ahhh WRONG!! Talk about talent, we all did excellent!! Do you know she had us perform for her in private sessions and advised us how to improve. If it was not for those sessions some of us would have passed out on stage. By the time you are done perfoming in front of here, you are ready for a crown of 10 million okay! She is tough, or must I say expects excellence?? Now lets talk about being taken care of. I came from outside the country and arrived at the Marriote, the huge magnificent hotel(it was to me okay:-) I could not stop taking pictures. The rooms were beautiful. We later moved to Sherraton which was just as nice. We were fed very well. If you thought we looked skinny it was just because we are naturally like that! On the day of the pageant the organizers came to make sure we had everything we needed to take with us because the show was 45 minutes from the hotel and I did to hear anyone crying that they forgot something. Thank you Lorrinda. Now let me take you to the dressing rooms! Nice big rooms , lots of lights, names on our doors, about three girls to a room. Professional Makeup artists and hair stylists. You think we looked good without proffetional help?? We had foooooooood. As you can tell I love to eat so I was pretty happy. The organizers made sure our clothes, jewerly and shoes were paired nicely, so that when changing we won't be running around crazy. We were each assighned someone to help us get dressed and keep us calm. This is why we did well, they kept us stress free. So give me a the poor lady a break! She tried her best, she hired people to help run the show. The ones in the back did the work but apparently the ones with the programme failed her.(for the record miss Dunbar refused to shift the blame, she was woman enough to take it all). The only reason we were upset was that the wrong person was crowned and you the crowed made that VERY clear by booooing the poor girl! Shame on
you. Our only stress was waiting to find out who the winner was. When I eared it was Miss Zambia I was sooooooooooooooo happy and proud to be African. I know everyone agrees. When we heard the crowd cheer when she did her talent, we knew she was gonna be tough to beat. You have to meet this woman, she is simply the best. everyones big sister or mother. Beautiful in and out. I am so proud of you ChiChi, I know you touched all the girl's hearts forever. We love you and we are all remember, I am coming on your trip. Like we said we are all here to work with you. Lets all carry the crown well and let us show Africa that we did this for her not for Miss Dunbar. I love you Miss Dunbar. I got what I came for exposure so I can have a voice, and I am sure going to make good use of it. At the moment I am enyoing the VIP treatment that comes with my title. Adaure, please excuse me for writina a book, I just had to. Remember what Miss Dunbar told us, "we are all sisters hear to make Africa a better place. I had a wonderful unforgettable experience with all the girls and I would do it all over again, so I can meet you, ChiChi and everyone!! ChiChi and Jeneba say it well, we are all winners FOR AFRICA!!! Excuse my errrors I don't have time to read through.

Hi it is me again,
I really wanted to thank Jonathan for sharing about the HiV woman, that is the most Powerful story, I have heard in my life. It is so heartless for people to even continue talking after hearing this. For one life saved, I would rest my case. I have shared this in church and with anyone who asks me what I think about all these terrible comments. I knew ChiCHi had God with her because she liked to pray. She prayed even when we went to eat at McDonalds! I teased her that it was only fast food. Before she went on stage, she was on her knees praying out loud without shame, I thought it was funny at the time but now I see how it works. I love that woman!
Well Jonathan, Do you have a brother?? If Africa has more men like you, it will sure change for the better. Thank you for writing, I hope you can get some sense into some peoples brains so they can start seeing the positive and not just the negative.
You and ChiChi as a couple, you will ROCK the world. Watch out people, this is no joke of a couple and they are both African!!
Love you all!! Peace and love to all who want it.

@anonymous written @10.15am:

sorry to say, but the reason why ur been excited/brainwashed about thw whole thing was because u came from out of the country. Lets talk. How much did u pay/raise for the pageant? How much was paid for practice?..that was all free..nothing was paid to the instructors, they where all volunteers. Wanna talk about her commmitting her time? duhh, she's the organizer, what else is she suppose to do?...and talking about marriott,.....for crying out loud, what pageant contestant stays at marriott hotel?..woteva happened to Hilton and the others?..are u trying to say, u didnt raise enough money to get treated better?..asper makeup, i know the lady that did it...and it was all voluntary...its good u enjoyed ur self/stay..dont get my wrong...but it can/could have been better.....do u know how much this woman made off sponsors?...dont let us even get into that. I rest my case.

I find it sad that as Africans we are always trying to bring each other down. Even if someone is TRYING to do something good we always find something bad to say. I had never heard of this Miss Africa International thing until I bumped into this site and from the sound of things it didn’t go too well. But what surprises me is that the people posting comments on this site make it seem as is that’s the only beauty pageant for Africans in the whole world. Have any of you heard of MNET Face of Africa? I’m from Zimbabwe and there are always beauty pageants being held and they are usually run very well and I’m sure that in other African countries they have similar stuff going on. So this one wasn’t run well, that’s unfortunate but its only one in a hundred other pageants held for Africans around the world.

Hmmmmm...
Interesting..(shaking my head) All we can do is pray for unity in our community. We need upliftment spirit. No one is perfect we are all born with flaws...
To know her is to love her.. to love her is to accept her flaws.. she is far from been perfect but she is the best we have now.. let us support her and uplift her. She is one of us.

Hello to all!!! My name is Jessica and I was a volunteer for the last event (2005)! It was spectacular and as well organized as a NEW organization can be! Let's all come to realization; Rome was not built in a day, nor was the United States. Sure there were a few flaws, but no one and nothing is perfect. As best as we can prepare for an event as big as this we must factor in the things we can't control.... Like the beautiful ladies wanting their faces re-done every 5 minutes because of pure vanity... or technical problems... or outfits ripping due to haste.... or heels that broke; the list goes on. To all volunteers that decided to leave, please reconsider. We want and need your help. To all those who considered helping please don't be swayed due to criticizm. Let's not yell and clash with each other because of petty things and a little revenge. Business is business and if you dis-like Ms. Dunbar put those feelings aside and think of the young ladies that wish to represent their countries and move forward in life with this on their resume.
Last year, I was the youngest to compete in the preliminaries and competed against 9 beautiful, educated and goal oriented young women to try and represent Nigeria.. I did not win but I gained an opportunity to help! I was backstage during the entire pageant pinning dresses, spraying hair, taking photos and encouraging my peers to do their best, smile and walk with pride! This year, I will do the same thing with no hesitation, because of the progress I want Africa to make.
How can we stop warfare back at home if we cannot agree to disagree right here over a pageant meant to bring POSITIVE recognition to the contestants and the countries they represent? If the show was that horrid, help us improve. Make a suggestion intented to help us and not just to hurt us. I came onto this by accident and I almost wish I had not seen it at all. All of you with so much malice and hate towards the organization and its president, still had the nerve to witness the last pageant knowing you had not enjoyed the ones before! It's as though you continue to watch just to assure yourself that it fails again. I have no real authority with the organization but I'm hurt and I pray you take my standpoint and read these things and imagine they were said about you!
Maybe this year things will be better; with help from all of you who had the time to write the negative things things can change. If you weren't satisfied with the attendance help us spread the word. If you didn't like the host last year, contact us and make a referral. If you didn't like the wait, contact us and constructively criticize us for that mistake. For all the other things you did not like; do the same and help us improve.
God Bless (ALL OF YOU)
