FELA: PICTURES THAT SPEAK A THOUSAND WORDS

CAPTURING A LEGEND

There are so many pictures and painting of Fela which capture his spirit and the essence of his music. Literally tons. From these anyone can see that indeed Fela was a captivating figure and an effervescent performer. Fela's official photographer Femi Bankole Osunla claims to have about 15,000 images of Nigeria's most popular export. You can see a few of the Official Collection of Fela's Photographs. These are some that I found online as I continue my week long Tribute to the Afrobeat King. Most of them appear to have been taken by Mr. Osunla while a few others are copyrighted to other photographers. You should also check out this pictorial tribute to Fela on the BBC. If you didn't read it yet, Mona also posted some of Fela pictures that are hosted by Urban Images as well as a Time line of Fela's life. Photos are linked directly from host sites for copyright purposes.

I followed this from AfricanWomenReblogs - interesting project, this Fela thing. Especially in his anniversary month.

In the 2nd photo down, Beko is the one on the extreme right (in dark shirt), as you've indicated. Just to add that the eldest of the Kuti brothers, Olikoye is in the middle. May they all rest in peace.

Adaure, i was wondering why you didn't cover the This day Music festival as many other blogs did. I was waiting to post my opinion when you did, but anyways, here it is:

I really don't know if i'm the only one who feels this way but something is totally amiss with the concept of the Thisday festival, i can't stand to watch it without getting angry; the reason? It could be that we, Nigerians have our priorities utterly misplaced. First the people dancing for 53hrs straight to break some world record, now this? HOW IN THE WORLD CAN PEOPLE PAY UP TO 100K for a show promoting foreign artistes- in a country struggling to promote our image economically and culturally?! I understand the festival's role in promoting cultural tourism but not through a misguided festival for Nigerians. We are meant to sell ourselves to the world, In my opinion, this is excessivness at its worst.

Okay, i am soooooo loving this tribute to Fela u have going on. I am one of the late musician's biggest fan..... Something i got from my pops. I grew up listening to Abami Eda, and all i can say is the dude oozed pure talent. Good thing one of his sons (femi) took after him. Thanx Addy for showcasing one of the greatest musicians that ever lived.

Hey Adaure,
Thanks so much for this detailed 'edjumacation' and the lovely photos.
You really sent me back to school - I did music up to JS3 and there was this babe G in my class who was one of the few doing Music with me (since you were allowed to choose between it and Fine Art). Well, one day we were studying famous Nigerian composers and the music teacher (can't remember her name but she was dry and sour-faced) asked G to stand up and talk about Fela Sowande (the composer). G with a perfectly straight face, goes 'Fela Anikulapo-Kuti plays Afrobeat and lives in Kalakuta Mansion'. Teacher (with face looking like she's trying to do some constipation shite) goes 'I AM TALKING ABOUT FELA SOWANDE'. G goes 'the only Fela I know is Fela Anikulapo Kuti' (much respect to Mr. Sowande, but kai, that was soo cool). Teacher goes 'Oya, kneel down, close your eyes, fly your arms, flare your nostrils, open your mouth, catch a bobo fly, eat it...etc etc'.
And G (baaaad babe) doens't even try to beg, she just does it in style (except the fly part).
Gosh... those were the days.
Back to your School on Fela though, had to laugh out loud at that photo of Fela, Koye and Beko at the protest rally. Did you notice the placard behind them 'Funlayo did not DESERVED the brutality'! Gotta love dat.
So proud of this guy called Fela, he is our icon and will live on titi lai lai. The guy had class (even if I disagree with the way he lived, he did it his way and deserves props for that).
I wrote a rather teenager-ish poem about him when he died, will fish it out, would love your opinion on it if you can spare a minute (cos after reading your blog, I know you have taste). If you'd rather not though, let me know.
I've said it before and will say it again, I love your work!

PS Tutsy, one of Fela's younger sons, Seun, also took after him. He performed at the recent ThisDay music festival. Interestingly, hear Seun and Femi are having some kwanta over the fact that Seun has been singing Daddy's songs. Sad, that. It's also interesting that a lot of peeps (particularly Shrine regulars) think Seun outclasses Femi. Me, I've never heard Seun so have no opinion on him, but I think Femi is MAAAAD hot (his music, not his looks... okay his looks too)!!
